This week Foxconn and Stellantis NV announced the details of their cooperation in the automotive sphere. A joint venture of Mobile Drive was created, in which the parties received equal shares. It will develop information and entertainment and telematic on-board systems for cars of this autocontraser. Not only cars with DVS will be covered, but also electric cars.
As Nikkei Asian Review explains, this initiative does not have a direct relation to the open MIH platform, which Foxconn introduced electric vehicles for contract production. Formally, the fih mobile division will be responsible for working with Mobile Drive, which is already working with Xiaomi, Nokia and Huawei. Although the FIH Mobile deprane contains software development to automate the car management process, for interaction with Stellantis NV this field of activity will not be distributed. It is known that in the field of autopilot Fiat Chrysler collaborated with Waymo, so after the creation of the Stellantis concern, this partnership will probably continue – at least in the North American market.
The needs of Mobile Drive will serve about 250 engineers, the main part of which will work in Taiwan, although the joint venture will have a team to manage projects in Europe. Stellantis NV is the fourth largest automaker in the world, and for Foxconn, this alliance will certainly become an important step towards strengthening positions in the automotive market. By the middle of the decade, Foxconn expects to take up to 10% of the electric vehicle market, releasing at least 500 thousand electric machines every year. A joint venture on the production of electric vehicles with the Chinese company Geely, Foxconn’s clients in this direction are ready to become American brand Fisker and Chinese BYTON manufacturer.
