Manufacturers of video cards for desktop PCs increased their profits in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year. According to Jon Peddie Research, it is associated with a sharp increase in average vacation prices. Simply put, video cards were sold much more expensive than a year ago.
In general, 11.77 million discrete graphics accelerators were sold for the first quarter. It is 7% higher than the indicator of the previous quarter and 24.4% more than a year ago. Usually, sales of video cards are reduced in the first quarter, but this year there was no fall. Sales growth can be explained by the raising demand from miners and gamers.
According to a fresh report, the volume of the video card market in the first quarter reached $ 12.5 billion, which is 370% higher than last year. The most significant growth of the market came to the second half of 2020, when the prices for video cards of all price categories sharply jumped in the fourth quarter of 2020 as a result of too high demand. We are talking about video cards from AIB partners of AMD and NVIDIA companies that produce their own versions of accelerators.
According to Jon Peddie Research, today the average price of a budget video card is $ 469, whereas a year ago it was only $ 141. The mid-level graphics accelerator costs $ 809 (a year ago – $ 262), and the high-end video adapter will permanently cost $ 1358 (it was $ 779). Analysts note that the rise in prices is due to a number of factors, including the lack of components and production facilities, as well as high demand.
Interestingly, the average price of the graphics processor and earlier gradually increased as the initial leveling systems transition to integrated graphic solutions, and the growth of the computing power of flagship decisions, to which buyers were ready to spend more and more. For example, the average price of a high-class video card in the first half of 2018 was about $ 500.
As for the share of GPU manufacturers on the market, NVIDIA retained leadership and surpassed its competitor in the face of AMD in a ratio of four to one. AMD managed to increase the market presence by 3 percentage points in the first quarter and secure a share of 20% in the supply of graphic chips. Nvidia has shrunk the share and now takes 80% of the market. It is also important to note that both companies sell the entire amount of GPU, which they can produce, and both raised the delivery for the first quarter.
