According to the Elec edition, Samsung Display will begin the production of flexible OLED panels for Google, Vivo and Xiaomi in October. The three specified companies are going to release devices with folding displays in the fourth quarter of this year.
It is indicated that Google is preparing a folding smartphone with a 7.6-inch screen. In rumors and leaks, the device appears under the name Pixel Fold. Vivo, in turn, is intended to submit a device with two screens – 8-inch main and 6.5-inch external. The main 8-inch display with the aspect ratio of 3.4: 3 will be produced by Samsung, while the production of the external panel will be carried out by BOE.
Samsung Display will also produce basic screens for folding smartphones from Xiaomi. Production of an additional screen that will be equipped with a device is entrusted to CSOT. Xiaomi first introduced the Rocking Smartphone MI MAX FOLD in March of this year. The device received an 8.01-inch internal and 6.52-inch external screens.
Another Chinese manufacturer of mobile devices, OPPO, transferred the release of its first folding smartphone for 2022. The novelty will receive a screen, the diagonal of which will be 7.1 inches in the unfolded state. The manufacturer is also going to equip the device with an additional 1.5-2-inch screen. It is assumed that the larger transistor (TFT) based on low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) will be used in a larger screen.
Last year, OPPO presented a prototype of a 7.7-inch brally smartphone with a flexible display (in the photo above), and also confirmed that he was negotiating with Samsung Display, Boe and Visionox companies on the development of a new flexible screen. For a device, which will eventually enter the market, samsung display displays will be used.
Huawei also planned to use Samsung Display’s flexible panels for their future folding smartphones, but negotiations on potential cooperation were postponed, sources close to this issue. In their previous folding devices Mate X and Mate X 2, Huawei used the Boe’s flexible panels.
As for Samsung Electronics, the South Korean manufacturer is going to release two new folding smartphones this year. The South Korean technological giant expects to put 6-7 million devices to the market for 2021. Last year, Samsung sold 2.5 million folding smartphones, thereby becoming the most significant client of its SAMSUNG Display division for revenue.
