SNAP CEO Evan Spiegel (Evan Spiegel) introduced on Thursday at a virtual event for the developers of Partner Summit, the first glasses of the company with supported reality. The novelty received a futuristic appearance, as well as rather rich functionality for its dimensions.
The first two generations of smart glasses of the company, published in 2016 and 2018, looked like sunglasses and had a camera in the corner of the rim. With it, it was possible to shoot a video, and later photos, which then could be transferred to a smartphone and publish in Snapchat or another social network. The fourth generation SNAP glasses were created by the Snap Lab secret hardware unit, which also develops drone with the camera.
New glasses called Spectacles AR are equipped with two displays with automatic brightness adjustment up to 2000 cd / m2, as well as optical waveguides that are able to apply computer images with AR effects created using Snapchat software tools.
Two front cameras use SNAP software to automatically detect physical surfaces and place the effects of Ar in such a way that they do not interfere with the real display of the world. Also, the device has four microphones, two stereo speakers and a touch panel for control. The functions of the glasses can be controlled using voice commands, saying “Hey Snapchat” (Hi, Snapchat).
Glasses weigh 134 grams, which is more than double the weight of the previous version, but much less than the Hololens AR headset from Microsoft. The duration of the autonomous work of smart points is half an hour. This is once again confirmed by the fact that the device is not designed for the consumer market, but is intended for developers creating the effects of augmented reality for Snapchat using the Lens Studio application.
The company also announced a number of new e-commerce functions with augmented reality and new tools for participants in social networks.
